I've got a pair of ram cichlids and 2 angel fish (don't think they're a pair) in a 50g tank at the moment. Am liking cichlids, but am not sure what else to put in. I'm looking to breed some cool fish in the tank (hence the pair of rams - not sure I want to get convicts...though easy to breed, I don't think I'd be able to pass any of the fry on after), but I'm not sure what else would be good. Any ideas? Cheers

Forget the Texas cichlid idea C_B mentioned, they'll make short work of your Rams.

You could try other Rams, Eartheaters, sajica maybe, keyholes are non-aggressive for sure.

I take it that you're looking for other Cichlid tank mates. Basically you'll be looking at relatively peacful species such as; Blue Acara's, Keyhole Cichlids, Flag Cichlids, Kribs, etc.

Any of the larger omnivorous, piscivore's may see your Rams as prey. Unless it can fit the Ram in its mouth most other cichlids will be safe tankmates, avoid guapotes at all costs they'll just rip your Rams to shreds. You could go for larger Herbivors like Uaru's but they can be difficult to keep. Sand sifters Geophagus are another option.

Peaceful Setup could be;

Jurapari Cichlid
Keyhole Cichlid
Kribensis Cichlid
Angelfish (get a group of 3 or more or ones going to be bullied)
Corydoras
Plus some small upper water dither fish

Rams are really cool fish, they were my first cichlid, it's amazing how they can just hover like a humming bird totally still. Breeding Rams can still be as aggressive as their larger cousins, the same for all cichlids.

the sajica would work for awhile but i think once the males a chunky 5-6" he'll cause trouble with your rams and angels. i would try keyholes tho:) iam picking a pair of wild rams up tomorrow:headbang2

o nvm i thought u wanted a cichlid taht will breed fast lol. well try some geos

It's all good bro, I wasn't trying to offend you. Plus he said his tank was 50 gallons so he needs some cichs that don't get too big.

I forgot to mention you might be able to swing a EBJD but I'm not sure on that.

Cockatoo Apisto's would be beautiful...if you took the angels out you could do a pair of discus, with the pair of rams and Bristlenose pleco, or a clown pleco, some oto's, or some cory's for janitorial duties.

Alrite! Thanks for all the info everyone. Got a fair few choices. Just depends on whether my LFS stocks any of these, or whether they can get any in. scubasteve06, you said that I could keep a pair of discus if I took out the angels. Would the environment which I have for the ram's (and possibly other cichlids if I can get hold of some) be suitable for the discus'? Don't they need super clean water all the time?
Cheers for all the help!

Rams and other such dwarf cichlids need superbly clean water params too. If I'm not mistaken I think most PH levels for rams meet the requirements of discus too. The reason you couldn't do angels and discus of course would be the constant bickering and picking by the angels on the discus. The rams and discus would be beautiful in a planted tank but so would the angels I have 3 angels in a 55 now and am also thinking about doing a pair of discus and a pair of rams....decisions decisions....
