situation. . .
I'm getting a 180gal in a couple months for my other New World cichlids. Usual guys. . . . . oscars, jacks, texas, firemouths, but in low populations and with lots of cover. Now. . . I know the peacock will get big enough eventually to eat most of the afformentioned species. That I'm prepared for. But how well do peacocks hold up to the stress of community cichlid tank life? Mine is only about 4'' now so I was planning on moving it into my 58gal to grow out before I even thought about putting it in the new tank with the big boys. How well do you think he would stand up to adult oscars if he was 12'' or so? I 've raised him from almost frysize and I've kept him alone for the most part >(only with plecos) so I really don't wanna lose him, esp now his color is coming in ;)

thx

p.s. I know he will outgrow the 180. I knew that when I bought him. He's my excuse to build something 1000+ and then use the 180 to grow out an arowana:) mwahahahaha

Like you said.

Grow him up first and then introduce him.

I had a similar set up with the a p.bass and s. american cichlids and a tiger shovelnose catfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum). Great tank, but the cichlids started to dissapear, but the cat was a great tank mate for the p.bass.

good luck!

I have 2 pbass about 13 inches and 9 months old with red bellied pacus and had them with larger oscars before that. They did not mess with the bass. Remember though that bass will eat anything that will just barely fit in their mouths, even if they can't swallow it for a couple of hours. It will just hang out of their mouths until it fits in their stomachs. The pacus are about 15 inches in length and get along great with my bass. As for the tiger shovelnose you have to be real careful with them. It doesn't matter what is in the tank with them. If it is 1/2-2/3 the length of their body and they are hungary they will eat it. Tiger shovelnose have an incredibly huge mouth and stomach to match.

I had two 12" peacocks with a 9" African pike and they did not get along at all. The pike would always try to bite them and the peacocks would always try to swallow him. I also had a 23" Silver Arowana and a 20" Black Arowana in that tank, along with a 12" Oscar and 2 7" Surinamensis. Everything got along fine except the pike.

Anything that doesn't fit into its mouth will make a decent tankmate. Pbass, except orinos are generally laid back!

Yup, little PBass are very delicate and non-aggressive. A 4"er would get murdered by equally sized cichlids from CA. In the meantime, moderately sized SA fish such as Silver Dollars would be excellent tankmates for your PBass.
