I have 2 red tailed and 3 unknown species at the moment. And they are with hujeta characins and doing good. As soon as they get to around 6-7'' the will be placed in the big tank with a Tatuaia payara and sengal bichir.---------If I could find more reds My goal would be to have as many barra's as i could find in one tank. Basically anything that will not eat them and is to big to be eaten is a good tank mate. They will not attack any fish that is above food size.

I can not think of a large cichlid I would trust with a juvi barracuda. So what cichlid do you speak of?

Yea the size was not but adult barra's are allmost unheard of in the trade for sale. A 10''er would fetch a price of close to 100-150 bucks and i would not think that the OP spent change like that, but you never know. They usually come in at around 3-5''

In your 55 just get the aces until you upgrade. And make sure it is cycled or I can promise you they will die. They can not tolerate ammonia at all.
