Photo of: Yellow Acara (Aequidens metae)

Scientific Name(s): Aequidens metae

Common Name(s): Yellow Acara, Twin Spot Flag Cichlid

Family: Cichlidae

Species Type: South American Cichlids

Maximum Size: 5 inches

Life Span: 12 years

Natural Habitat: South American rivers and streams

Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons

Tank Region: All over

Possible Tank Mates: Compatible with most community fish that have the same water requirements but also work with less aggressive south american cichlids such as firemouth meeki, convicts and severums

Description: The Acara Family is found only in tropical South America. This family includes two groups, True Acaras and Acara related species. Included in this family are cichlids that are, and formally were part of the genus Aequidens. Now, due to some recent reclassification, the Acara group includes fish of the following genera; Aequidens, Bujurquina, Cleithracara, Guianacara, Laetacara, Krobia, Nannacara and Tahuantinsuyoa. True Acaras are made up of species that remain under the genus Aequidens, while Acara-related species include the other, previously mentioned, genera.

Temperature Range 75°F - 85°F

pH Range 5 - 6.2

Hardness 1° - 4°

Breeding Information: The yellow acara is a substrate spawner but breeding in captivity has proven to be difficult. Feeding the fish well and similating rainfall by adding collected rainwater can assist in encouraging the fish to spawn.

Sexing Information: Very difficult to tell at smaller sizes. Males grow slightly larger, while mature females are fatter. Males will also develope longer dorsal and anal fin rays as they become larger. While the females will have more rounder anal and dorsal fins.

Diet: Omnivore - does well with flakes and pellets but supplimental foods such as frozen or fresh green vegetables are good too.

Temperment: Peaceful

Edit: I just came up with all this off the top of my head!

if you go back to the SA/CA cichlid forum and look to the top right you will find a search box that will help you no end.
also i wouldnt just use a generalised profile as cichlids seem to be very different from fish to fish with regards to temperaments. look for peoples experiences as well as the usual info, IMO these are the best bits of info you can have.

s-s-s-search! :D

gee thanks... the whole reason i asked was precisely because i wanted to know peoples experiences with these fish. I had already looked at numerous online profiles.

your question states "tell me everything i need to know about..." you did not ask for experiences and we were just trying to help so sarcastic "gee thanks" was un called for. a good attitude to have with people your asking for help off.
i mentioned the search function as people with more posts than you have not found it. so i thought i would be nice and take the time out of my day to help you a little.

They get a lot bigger than 5". Haven't kept them personally in my tanks, but the ones we had at the LFS I worked at were in the 8-10" range.
