hey guys I was just in set for getting my enclosure for my future ackie monitor tank when a big issue stopped my dead in my tracks. I just realized how friggin expensive the food is!!! is it true that a single ackie eats like a hundred crickets a day?? I was going to breed mealworms until my reptile enclosure maker told me that ackie can only eat crickets as a staple food!! is that true??? How much do I need to shell out in crickets a week??? cost??i live in Canada so dubia roaches are banned. Are there any large insects that are acceptable for an ackie to eat AS A STAPLE DIET??? If I were to breed crickets Can i leave them out side in my garage for the whole year?? I live in Canada so it can get below freezing in the winter. what should I do? I don't want to get a different lizard!!

No, you can't keep crickets in your garage; they will either die or at least will stop reproducing when it gets too cold. I found that you can legally have one species of roach in Canada; that roach is the German cockroach (Blattella germanica).

You'd better start thinking about getting a different lizard; monitors aren't for those with small budgets.

Don't know about your area but here I can get a 1000 crickets for $25. That would be enough to last you about a month with a single ackie. Also, there is a prepared diet called Carnivore Carnage that you can order online. It is perfect for monitors. Also chicken giblets, ground turkey (raw), and chicken liver are great supplements that are very inexpensive. It does not have to be 100% crickets, it is far better to have a varied diet. Dust everything with vitamin powder too and you will be golden. Just avoid fatty foods like mice.

May try raw ground turkey with vitamin powder added in.had a savannah that loved it, of course he loved everything.

have you tried the carnivour carnage on ackies??

I don't own them but we have had a trio in the shop for over a year and they have bred for us. We feed them each about 10 crix every other day and a few cubes of CC once or twice a week. They are all fat and happy.

they are adults right??? How big?? i think only the adults tolerate a feeding once everytwo days. Don't the babies and juvies need to be feeded a cr@pload of food each day??

It would be absolutely awesome you you told me the food you feed the ackies from baby to adult in a weekly basis/schedule

eg. baby:

mon:
tues:
weds:
so on
