Praised by critics as one of the best films of the year, The Elephant in the Living Room takes viewers on a journey deep inside the controversial American subculture of raising the most dangerous animals in the world, as common household pets. Set against the backdrop of a heated national debate, director Michael Webber chronicles the extraordinary story of two men at the heart of the issue – Tim Harrison, an Ohio police officer whose friend was killed by an exotic pet; and Terry Brumfield, a big-hearted man who struggles to raise two African lions that he loves like his own family. In the first of many unexpected twists, the lives of these two men collide when Terry’s male lion escapes its pen and is found attacking cars on a nearby highway.

Highly recommend watching this documentary, I am not by any means pointing fingers to anyone in this forum, i just want to make myself clear on that! not looking to start a "forum war" just bringing forward a truly marvelous film that is a real eye opener to exotic pet owners..

No. Tim Harrison who was interviewed extensively in this film has a brother (Jim) who started the KY reptile zoo. BOTH of them were some of the biggest purchasers of exotic venomous before the zoo was started. Then out of no where Jim started up the KY reptile zoo and began to think of himself as the only person that was qualified to keep hots at all. Now both brothers are partnered with the HSUS (which I am not going to get into in this post but if you want to see why they are terrible, look here). They are hypocrites and liars. This movie is extremely biased and paints a terrible picture of the serious exotic animal keeping community.

Put the figures in the story aside ie (Tim Harrison & Terry)
I think this film points out the lack of responsibility of some people that keep exotic pets. Not saying that exotic pets should be outlawed at all but common sense has to come into play. One thing that gets pointed out in this film is the "cool" factor that some people want to feel, the "i have a tiger, or mountain lion or python etc and they become the talk of the neighborhood but fail to think long term and then find themselves doing the irresponsible thing and that film pointed that aspect very well.
You're coming from the aspect of "the responsible" and i gather that you are responsible with what pets you have and i have all the utmost respect for you and those pet owners. If done right, given the proper enclosure, care, attention etc. should be allowed but we live in a "here now" society and what was once a cool thing yesterday is no longer the cool thing today.
I myself am a former exotic pet owner, the city i lived in passed a bylaw outlawing any exotic pet ownership. I feel the film didn't portray the good side of "exotic pet owners" and the responsible ones but as the saying goes "only takes one bad apple to spoil a bunch" and that's exactly what this film points out...

The title is so missleading, I thought a man had a living room big enough to keep his pet elephant... :(

To be fair, exotic animals are NOT for everybody and often these poorly-educated people run into the problems when try to make the exotic animals into the perfect household pet that they thought they can. Only a well-educated responsible person can own an exotic animal. Sadly there are too many irresponsible people in the world and has ruin the hobby for us.

Oh here's the fact: Pet bulls kill more people in a year than a rodeo bucking bulls or spanish fighting bulls. I can't tell you how many times I had to pick up a problem bull from various farms that raising them when they are bottle calves. I always haul these bulls to the slaughterhouse. Some animals aint just meant to be a pet.

I have not seen this film, but I'm downloading it now in order to formulate my own opinion on the matter.

I finally watched Grizzly Man the other night, talk about the greatest unintentional comedy..
