My punch list of "Don't Get it."

People with blinding white sand everywhere complaining that their fish are stressed.

Blinding white sand as the default substrate of choice.

People who get flowerhorns and feel obligated to suffer them in a bare glass box. This is followed by no background and mirrors.

People who refuse to believe how big a species can get because they've seen stunted "healthy" fish in a too small tank.

The idea that topping off once a month is a water change for a small tank. It's a water ADD, not change.

Complaining about nitrates and not doing upkeep. (" I change the water once every 3 months, wtf is wrong")

Not having sturdy lids/weights for jumpers then hollering about their bacon crisp fishy on the floor.

Wondering why their fish are skittish in a high traffic noisy area with no background. Often the tank is near a window.

Wondering why "window tanks" have wild temperature swings. DUH. But the fish get sunshine!

Overpowering/oversized grow lights on 24/7. Fishkeeper then whines about excessive algae. (see window tanks also)

Black substrate lovers who don't get that dark colors absorb light. Get those beamers out! And more is darker. A 30 gallon tank with black looks good. A 300 gallon would look like the black hole.

People who don't pay attention to planting instructions by stuffing every plant root system into substrate, even when some plants must float or will rot.

The idea that smaller tanks need almost no maintenance.

Fresh water with dirty filters.

Old water with clean filters.

"Cleaning" bio filters every water change. Panic at following crash.

"Fish Keepers" watching incompatible fish destroy each other week after week, sit on their ass like morons and keep asking for advice. (See @holes who really love violence. Or "How to hate fish in one easy lesson.")

You've missed out the most annoying one FINWIN FINWIN , to me anyway. That is the hobbyists who come on wanting advice but get all shirty when, instead of hearing what they want to hear, they get some different advice altogether, usually good advice too!!

Let's not forget the "I'll get a bigger tank later as they grow" syndrome. That is until

You need a new car
House needs repairs
Family needs financial help
gotta pay the rent

But you're on a 10 year plan to get that bigger tank!

Remember, baby steps. Start with

a 55
then a 75
then a 125
then a 180
and FINALLY a 240 or 300. Because you want to save money from buying a huge tank!

I agree with your points, but I strongly criticize how new or young fishkeepers are treated here, especially when they ask questions like those you've mentioned. They are often labeled as 'trolls' or bombarded with criticism from multiple members instead of being welcomed. It feels like some are just waiting for the perfect opportunity to pounce. This kind of behavior is discouraging and can prevent people from seeking advice on fishkeeping forums, and it shouldn't be tolerated.

We must remember that we don’t know where someone learned about fishkeeping or their perspective on what they believe is right, even if it’s wrong. It's important to address these situations with kindness and tolerance.

I don't believe anyone thus far has even mentioned "new" or "young" fish keepers! The replies so far, from what I can see, are just a generalisation of some fish keepers. There's no finger pointing in the direction of any specific age group.

Which comment in particular are you refering to?
