I am looking for information on sealing a plywood tank. I dont have access to sweetwater being a canuck here. I was wondering what types of appoxy I could use. I am debating on wether or not to use fiberglass.
Awesome tank; fantastic fish too!! I am in the planning stages for a outdoor cinderblock tank. I am thinking maybe 10'x5'x4', which should be about 650-700 gallons (if my math is right!). Bigger is possible, as I am building on an existing pad that is about 16'x16'. I am intrigued by your window; I would love to put a viewing window on one side, but I am no engineer. I am not against using plywood instead of blocks. Any ideas would be great. As far as fish go, I have 2 baby pacus (5") that will definitely be going in. I am getting info from my lfs on availability and prices of various monsters. So far, these have caught my eye- Blk aro, albino clown knife, snakehead, managuense, fire eel, peacock bass, and an rtc. The lfs should have prices for me tomorrow. I know I am looking at 3-4' on most of these, so please give me suggestions on a minimal tank size. Thanks ahead of time, TomAnythingfish;399977;399977 said:I am planning to write a detailed article about constructing large inexpensive fish tanks if there is sufficient interest. I have built many tropical fish aquariums over the years; the most recent is a 2400 gallon tank 12’ by 8’ by 4 feet high with a 7 foot window.
The cost in 2003 was $2,700.00 including everything: tank, heat, lighting, pump and filtration; but not including my 30 days labor, sales tax, power and water hook-up and ground prep.
I live in Seattle Washington USA, between the 47th and 48th parallel, North Latitude; my year-round average aquarium operating cost for electricity, weekly water changes, lighting and filtration pump operation is about $60 (US) monthly. These figures should give you a place to start when calculating your own monster fish tank operating expenses.
If you post to this thread tell us about your dream tank; what kinds of fish would you keep there? If you have questions I will try to incorporate them into my article. Do you have a do-it-yourself aquarium project experience to tell about? -- if so, I am sure other members would benefit.
This is a photo of my 2400 gallon aquarium at night looking into the 7 foot window.
This is a photo of my Arapaima Gigas which was 3” long in January of 2005 and is now over 36”. He/she eats trout chow, hot dogs, any fish up to 8”, shrimp, beef heart and fingers.
Its not looking to good since this thread was started in June 06Oscarboyz;634423; said:Please write the article i really need it lol
