So I was recommended to a certain Chinese restaurant, and I just recently got the opportunity to eat there. Now, I don't have a huge fish tank, nor a pond (inside or outside), but I've always wanted to build an indoor Koi pond. So you can imagine my delight when there was an indoor koi pond as soon as you walk in.
My question here was about the tile that was lining the bottom and the sides.
Do you have to put some type of coating over it? Do any of you guys have tile in your ponds?
While I thought it was semi-tacky my wife liked it(with the exception of the design). So I'm kind of hoping that you guys will say that it's very bad to have for (any kind of) fish.
Thoughts? Comments?

Probably just clay or slate. Most rocks are fine with fish. Im guessing they had pond liner down then siliconed the rocks to the liner or something.

If you want the look I think you are talking about, you will have to put silicone
or some sort of water proof grout if there is such a creature. Something like you would see in a shower, although most of the time its silicone. Thats just my 2 cents. Good Luck. Keep us posted if you decide to go through with it.

The glazing on some tiles contains lead, so I would steer clear of any patterned tiles just to be safe. And colored grouts, too. Other than that, as long as it's done right it should do great.

you can use any tile and seel it with the paint used on the inside of plywood ponds

You can quote me on this one, then show this to your wife...

All tiles contain a chemical called Methyl Glycol which slowly gets asorbed into the body of the fish. It acculimulates enough until it destroys the lining of the intestines. This will take anywhere from 8-20 years but when you are dealing with koi who are supposed to live 80+ years, that is a very short life. Also, smaller fish this can take effect within 2-3 years so watch out. If I were you I would use a liner instead!

Now the truth...

You will be fine.
