My roommate just bought a tire track at the lfs today, and they told him it would grow to a max size of about 14 inches. But several sites have the adult size averaging upwards of 24 in. What size can the tt be expected to grow to? Tank size would be an issue for anything above 14 inches...

Well mine is about 26-27". I believe there are 3 or 4 species that are commonly referred to as a tire track so this could also have bearing.

i have a 10 inch young one, which i bought at 6 inches. he's grown about 4 or so. he's also added much girth. i was at a lfr just last week and they had one that was about 12 inches but he was as fat as a polish sausage. they wanted $50 for the 12 incher. mine is about as round as a hot dog.

Every spiney eel I've heard of that is referred to as a tire track eel has a maximum size of 28"+.

Mine is 24"+ and I keep him in a 180g with a small shoal of guppies for snacks. He will tear apart and kill 3"+ goldfish and then pick through their remains. I cut up then feed him market shrimp, mackeral, oriental white shrimp and smelts as well.

That's one of the intrigues of fishkeeping, "You just never know for sure until it happens" regardless of what the books or anybody says! A lot depends on setup and food, but yours may have come from unusually small or exceptionally large parents- who knows! My first Tire Track, about 20 yrs ago, never reached over about 14" in the 8 yrs I had him. My current baby has grown from 3" to 16" in the last 6 months. I've already had to move him from a 55 to a 110 because my cories were mysteriously disappearing... I would suggest that if you've already grown fond of him, just wait and see.
