Hi,

i was wondering how to determine the sex of these fish? i know for sure 1 is female as they have laid eggs 3 times but everytime they have done it on a rock and they end up all turning white and not hatching..could i have 2 females? or they are infertile? heard 2 females can pair up as well and lay eggs. they stopped laying eggs after the 3rd time and they tried the 3 times all within 2 weeks. i have attached 2 pics of the 2 fish any info would help thanks!

My best guess is your top photo is male, bottom female. He's got a deeper slope to the forehead, pointier fins and a more streamlined body. The possible female has redder eyes (supposedly common for this species) and a plumper body.

But Uarus can be difficult to sex. I have been told that they are also difficult to successfully breed in captivity.

Either way, nice fish. I have a small crew of juveniles and am looking forward to seeing them grow up like that. :)

Hey thanks for replying and yeah I was thinking the first one might have been male since his body shape is way different from the female as the female does have the very round plump feature as you said. Didn't know females mostly get red eyes either.

Oh really so they are hard to breed in captivity? I guess that's why the pair I have were not able to spawn successfully yet even though the female laid eggs 3 times none of the eggs have hatched hopefully one day they will be successful!

I actually used to have a 3rd one but it was smaller and the pair I have now in the photos didn't like it and always attacked it so I had to remove it in the end and kept these 2 together.

Thanks and hope your fish grow up nicely how are they doing so far?

In most cichlids with red eyes it seems to be more often the male that has really red ones.

Mine are just tiny little ones. A little over an inch, with their protective baby colors and looking nothing like Uarus yet.

Already fearless, curious, personable and eating like pigs though. :D

Oh that sounds so awesome they are so active hope they grow up well.

Also my pair spawned for the 4th time unfortunately the eggs turned white again and never hatched so looks like the pair may have just eaten up the eggs since they prob knew the eggs won't hatch? I have a feeling they will just keep spawning over and over. Just hoping one day maybe the eggs will hatch?

Have you tried adding Paragard or methylene blue to the water to prevent fungal growth?

They will eat fungussed eggs in an effort to keep it from spreading to the others.
