Using coal rock as aquarium decorations. Pros and cons?

I have a possibility to get nice pieces of coal and I want to use it for my aquarium rock scape.

It's light and I want to stack a lot of it. So that would be good. Also it is easy to modify.

What changes would it have to my water? Anyone used them?

I am planning to keep Tropheus. Would it have any problems with them scraping algae from the rock?
 
Coal contains too many impurities. I wouldn't take the chance on using it in an aquarium. Lots of other safe rocks to choose from.
 
I've seen it used in LFS and the owner said he had no problems with it. Oh well..

Any other opinions?

I could go with basalt, but its really heavy.. and I don't think I could stack a lot of it.
 
Slate can be stacked, splits easy.

If the black color is what you're looking for, try obsidian. Raw coal (anthracite) may be safe provided you have access to the assay report where it was mined. Otherwise, there are risks of introducing sulphur, arsenic, lead, and other impurities into your tank.
