Hi, I was wondering What I could house my vampire tetra or Hydrolycus scomberoides I wanted to house it with oscars or clown knifes or fish of similar size. Would that be ok? I am not n expert about these fish so any help would be appreciated.

Yes you can although I would ensure you have it feeding well and comfatable first.

Not sure about the Oscar though. Aggressive feeder and will get larger quicker than the acing and may cause issues.

Oscars No way - Scomb's aren't the most aggressive eaters and Oscars eat everything and anything in a big way. The Scomb will probably starve to death. As for the clown knife I can't really say for sure one, I've never owned one. I have a BGK living with my Scomb for the past 19 mo. with no issues. Better tankmates would be non aggressive shoaling fish that aren't larger than the Scomb but large enuff not to get eaten. Freshwater Cudas, Leaf Fish, small Cats, and False Gars make good compatible tankmates.

First, I would like to recommend staying away from the Oscar. At the LFS I work at, we get at least one large Oscar a week as a trade in and once they reach 8", they never seem to get along with anything. Cichlids get more territorial as they age, and especially in the case of an Oscar, they are almost always best left as a single fish.

Clown Knives are hit or miss. I have seen peaceful clown knives, but I have also seen really aggressive clown knives.

I would recommend, freshwater barracudas, catfish that max out around 12", black ghost knives/african knives and just about any PEACEFUL fish that stays too big to be eaten. Scombs are not an aggressive fish.

could I possibly house it with a different species of vampire tetra?

You could. There are two other species that appear in the hobby. Rhaphiodon Vulpinus and Hydrolycus Tatauaia.

The H. Tatauaia is out of season right now though. R. Vulpinus IME get claustrophobic and need more than 2x their length as turning space, so at 9" you would probably need a tank wider than 18" before they start nose rubbing until they die.

Depending on size I have a big Armatus with rays, pikes, puffer, ripsaw cat and black arowanas. My tats are only 6" and they are with pup rays, clown loaches and a jurunese cat. I tried some Brycon dentex with the tats and it spooked the tats too much. I would keep to more mellow fish for the tats. Ones not to flashy or fast!!
