Depending on where you go in Mexico, they can be called, Paletta, or Mojarra de la Luna, or Mojarra colorada, in the US red head (along with 5 other species of Vieja), or black stripe cichlid, or window cichlid.
The name fenestrata refers to the black vertical bars that resemble window frames.
But as stated above, Vieja fenestrata is the only realistic , and proper nomenclature, in the parlance of our time (for a non-mutt) legitimate individual.
