Volcanic soil and fire eels after 7827&&&_8/

So my buddy bought my son a Fire Eel for his birthday facing. I want to have plants in my tank as well and would love to try this volcanic soil.

I find if they have a home away from your plants they don’t really disturb anything. Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by volcanic soil?
Crushed up volcanic rock? I would think that was too coarse for them.
