How long do you guys think I could keep a pair of Warmouth in a 20 gallon long tank? One year? Two Years? I will be purchasing a pair of 3-4 inch Warmouth here soon and right now, this is the only tank I have up and running.

I did a search and it seems that the consensus on this site is that a 55 gallon could support a pair of them for life. Given that my 20 gallon long is the same width and height of a standard 55 gallon and only 18 inches shorter, how long do you think I could keep the two of them in there before having to upgrade? I intend to upgrade to a 55 or even a 75 in a year or two, I just don't plan on doing it anytime in the near future.

What do you guys think?

Warmouth are the least aggressive of any Lepomis I have kept. They would probably be all right for quite a while in that tank as long as you can keep the water quality up. Stucture (drfitwood, plants) is very helpful to keep the fish secure and peaceful; they also show better color that way.

When you say pair, do you mean an M/F pair? Sunfish don't pair up like cichlids, and it's usually better to have a high F:M ratio to spread out harrassment by the dominant male.

If your tank has the dimensions you quoted, it is a 29 gallon.

I agree with Noto, especially on the water parameters.....when the Warmouth get about 5-6 inches you would need to have alot of filtration to keep your water quality good. A suggestion I would make is to shop for a used 90-125gallon online when you decide to upgrade so that you can have other fish with your Warmouth, Stonecats and Golden Shiners make Good tankmates if you have the space and filtration for large lepomis species.

Great fish! Definitely one of the more peaceful Lepomis species, the color and patterns will surprise you if they are kept nice and healthy, Had trouble getting mine off live food but if you get them small enough you should be able to train them easily.
I agree Warmouth can have some really cool looking patterns.

Ok, this sounds like it might work. And yeah, I just checked, the tank I have now is only 13 inces tall and it is a 20 gallon long. I think I'm going to sell this one and purchase a 29 gallon for the extra height.

And ok, what do you guys think about 3 Warmouth in a 29 gallon? I would purchase 2 females and 1 male. I don't necessarily want them to breed but I also don't want any aggression in the tank. It's either that or I could purchase two females.

As for filtration and tank setup I definitely have that covered. I'll be running two AC 30s and the tank will be full of plants and rocks/driftwood.

Warmouth average full grown length is between 8 and 12 inches so a 29g will be good for a year maybe two years max. if you purchase them at 3-4 inches as stated; that being said, Warmouth make great pets and if your willing to buy a new tank in a year or two they will probably thrive in a 29g as a species tank, especially with driftwood and plants.

I suggest you just get two females. Wait on adding the male until you can get a bigger tank. If I may ask, who are you buying sexed adult warmouth from?

+1...you could probably get away with 2 adults in a 90g. In my book at least. Granted there would be space for other fish in there, especially if you have awesome filtration.
