ive heard people use water softener salt instead of aquarium salt

lets here your opinion on this

i also heard it says on the bag its safe for aquariums
well i looked on every bag in lowes and none said anything
also looked online on mortons website with no luck

i use the mortons from lowe's...all good so far

This might sound stupid but are all water softener salts the same. I might wanna give this a shot. The water i use for my tanks is filtered and softened anyway but I always add aquarium salt to it too.

It's the exact same stuff I got in bulk from DC when I worked at Petsfart.
It's safe. Some arent though. Make sure it doesnt have that 5% extra of different things. Read the bag.

....as many have said read the label... the most common type found is "solar" salt made from the evaporation of sea water. This is typically a sodium chloride based salt. Another type becoming very popular with the health crowd, is potasium chloride salt. This is mined in western Canada... therefore about 2-3x more expensive. The common trade name is KLife. What is more important to know... many manufacturers add chemicals as cleaners for the resin used in the softener. These are for cleaning and preventing iron fouling of the resin beds. These are typically indicated on the bag as such. Stay clear of these types.

lol midnight, last time we had this discussion you got mad at me and said i was a cheap bastard!!! :D i posted the links, and i will post them again. if you get the right kind, its just salt. no other way to look at it:

8) Which Morton products can be added directly to a koi pond or fresh water?

When salt supplementation is advised, Morton recommends using Morton® White Crystal® Solar Salt or Morton® Canning and Pickling Salt for fish ponds and fresh water aquariums, as these products do not contain additives. Note that it may be advisable to make a solution from the salt before adding it to the pond or aquarium. Please see your fish expert or veterinarian for the proper use of salt in a pond or aquarium.
