A huge 27.3kg tortoise was killed and cooked into dishes.Although I'm not interested in this nourishing food and feel rather pity about the animal. This is very common in China, especially in Guangdong Province. The SARS disease was proved to be caused by eating wild animal.

That is truly a sad thing to see..:(

That's not a tortoise. that is a turtle. Soft shell turtle (FW).

Seems rather big to be nice for cooking. this soft shell turtle is also eaten (delicacy?) over here too.... though the desirable size is 1 foot or so ... a lot of these are exported to china in the north. though you can find these in restaurants in downtown too. Now a days it is farmed too... though pellet raised one is not so prized.

it is actually quite nice, but i try to avoid it (i.e. try not to contribute to demand). still, differnt part of this turtle taste different: depending on which part of the meat you eat, it tastes like fish, chickent or red meat.

PS: you can mix its blood with alcohol ... looks funny tastes even worse.

Whats the problem here? Is it a threatened or endangered animal?

Also who wants to bet that the 5lb bag of Tyson chicken you bought at the grocery store last Sunday cost more then these people make a day, maybe even a week?!?

i agree with JD. some of you think its a cute little turtle, i see it as normal food for people in another country. just because you think its weird or gross, doesnt mean its wrong. the USA way isnt the only way. and besides, these soft shell turtles as sold as food in SF and Oakland's chinatowns. they are live, but when you buy them, the slaughter it on the spot.

no different from chickens really
