I've seen other's 2x4 stands and the wood seems very nice, knot free and attractive to the eye. The lumber at places like Home Depot and Lowes is not so attractive, full of knots and warped. Where's the best place to get some decent looking lumber or what type would you recommend ? I'm looking for something that I can just paint over without the need to add plywood on top.

Most place will have different grades in lumber. If not then I just sort through. But with 2x4's your not going to have a nice finished look, no mater how nice they are, with out putting some kind of finish wood on top. I would suggest covering the 2x4's with some kind of a 1x? board. I personally like poplar.

I buy all of my 2x4s from Lowes. I will admit, it does take quite a while to sort through the stack to find good ones.

The last couple of times I got them from Lowes and they were super high quality. It was the opposite as normal, all were straight and you could not find one with a knot in it.

If get to the box stores when they 1st cut open a new bunk of lumber your more likely to find good lumber. It only takes a couple of hours for the boards to be picked over though and then you're in for a long stay to sort through it all. And there is no way of knowing when the new bundles get opened, it all depends on the amount of lumber gets sold that day/week.
