Why buy it at Home Depot or Lowe’s? Most pet stores even that don’t sell fish have big bags of substrate. If I had to guess though I’d say anything would be fine as long as it’s natural and you wash it thoroughly.

because thats where i get my sand. id also rather not spend a fortune on gravel for an already expensive aquarium when i can get it for 10% the price in bulk.

yeah im thinkin of going with the pea pebbles but the reviews say that the bags are particularly dirty/dusty this year. so im trying to see if any one has found one of the rockey substrates at a hardware store to be particularly good.

I like Pool Filter Sand, and if you get it from places that sell pools, it is usually semi-pre-washed.
I don't like pea gravel, I tried it for a while, and found the large interstitial spaces allowed crud to build up and rot in-between the large pea sized pieces, and work its way too deep in the substrate, not easy siphon out, creating a nitrate sink.
I like sand because it keeps crud on its surface, very visible, and easy to spot and vacuum out.
