Hey guys,

So I have started looking at plecs and want to find a plec that will eat the algae off my tank glass/bogwood.

I'm looking for a plec that does not grow very big, at the moment I have a golden nugget pleco! I think he might be eating some algae but not sure!

What other pleco's out there will eat algae (mainly off tank glass) and grow to a reasonable yet not large size?

Thanks guys,
Swarsh

best bang for your buck is a common plec. your gold nugget probably hides out a lot right? and if the common gets too big you can take it to the lfs and swap for a smaller one.

Don't get common. They will eat algae when young but as they grow 6" or more, they will produce more waste than anything else in your tank. And they will start eating other food than algae.

Bristlenose is best for algae control.
I agree...

I also have a gold nugget pleco and want another pleco that eats algae since I got rid of my gold spot. I've decided that bristlenose are probably the best choice and I suggest the same for you

+1 on the bristlenose. Exactly what you are looking for. Most of the fancy type plecos are more carnivorous minded.

Hmm I see, thanks for the advice guys~

Does my gold nugget pleco actually eat algae? I've only recently introduced him into my big tank and for some reason I've seen less algae around (I also have a flagtail that occasionally eats algae)

Is there any other plec's that eat algae apart from bristlenose as I'd like it to look more "pleasant" :P
But bristlenose does sound like the best for my case!

Thanks,
Swarsh

There are some very attractive bristlenoses. I like the albino "common bristlenose" and their golden color (http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?species=ancistrus+cf_cirrhosus&image_id=7818). If you have very soft water (and slightly acidic), you may want to consider a "starlight" bristlenose, Ancistrus dolichopterus (see: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=221).

If you want something that stays really small, what about otocinclus? They stay very small (see: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=107).

Ahh siamese algae eater? Problem with those are my arowana, dat and pbass.. =/

The ancistrus looks really nice though, are they rare in the uk? might have to look for a couple of those!

Thanks
