why my plecos jump to the surface catching a bubble air and then go back?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Can you please get a video of this abnormal behavior?

Plecos come from fast moving water bodies. i dont see surface agitation what are you using for filter? It looks like lack of oxygen as all of my tanks have air bubbler (sponge or airstone) wavemakers, filters breaking the air surface constantly

Invest in an airpump and run a bubbler or a sponge filter as a secondary as it is obvious it is not enough to oxygenate the water. I have a flex 15 myself and use air pump with air stone and used the output part of the water shooting up towards the surface at first its not a good system whatsoever for oxygenating the water from my flex experience.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong here. Plecos breathe air and often are seen going up to take gulps of air.

the OP has failed to mention he also has puffers gasping for air as just stumbled onto the thread. so it solidified my comment about the water needing aeration. It’s an oxygenation issue- and NO its not normal for plecos- cories yes, plecos no.

I’ve always thought and heard that like other catfish, plecos breathe air and will take breathes from the top of the tank. Every pleco I’ve ever had had shown this behavior

then your tanks not set up right for them. its rare I see mine do it lol. I had L264s, L114, L24, L032 and BNs and didn’t do this stuff often - i never see my jaguar cats do it either.
