oh, i kinda felt that the title was misleading, i ain't asking, but was showing these pics to highlight the barbels which look almost like feathers and thats the reason the synodontis having these type of barbels are labeled as featherfin catfish commonly

and about the substrate, it works out great if you have fish which are better kept with dark substrate, kinda like smooth edged black chips, the moment i saw this at one of the LFS here, picked up the whole bag :D, goes great for my jars tank.

you seem to have a Synodontis ocellifer instead of a S. eupterus but I'm not sure unless we get a full body pic. The S. eupterus is the one that is considered the feather fin beacuse on maturing and adult fish they have multiple trailers in their dorsal fin.
