Hello,

I have just received a group of 5 wild caught Hypselecara Temporalis that were collected in the Ucayali river in Peru.

The fish range in size from around 2.25 inches up to 2.75 inches (6 - 7 cm) and I have included photos and a short video (they are not the greatest photos / video) of them below before I placed them in the aquarium.

I am aware in the photos that the fish are displaying their stressed colouration. I have been talking to reputable people when it comes to cichlids and I am getting mixed responses. Some say that they are H. Temporarlis (which I believe them to be especially as I know the catch locale of the Ucayali River in Peru. But some say that their body shape is reminiscent of H. Coryphaenoides. I personally believe them to be H. Temporalis due to their catch location and from all I have read H. Coryphaenoides does not occur in Peru.

I am finding it hard to find photos of wild caught adults from this location. If anyone has adult photos/ videos of their Hypselecara from this locale please post them. I plan to track this group as they develop and grow (and hopefully gain a pair from them) so we are all able to see what Hypselecara from this locale turn out looking like as adults.

They are H. temporalis.

- H. coryphaenoides are not found in Peru.
- H. coryphaenoides do not have a black horizontal band down the center of the body (the fish in your photos do).
- H. coryphaenoides have a thick black blotch/bar that runs through the peduncle, versus temporalis which have a spot on the upper half of the peduncle (as seen in your photos).
I believed that they were H. Temporalis like I mentioned above as I knew H. Coryphaenoides aren’t found in Peru as stated everywhere I’ve read about them ?
Do you know of anyone who has adults from this catch locale? I’m having a hard time trying to find photos of adult H. Temporalis found within the Ucayali river compared to many readily available photos of H. Temporalis found in rivers like the Oyapock

I thought you might find this interesting, a set of water parameters found while collecting temporalis in a tributary of the Rio Ucayali.\View attachment 1409706
Its from the bool American Cichlids II, Large Cichlids.
How interesting. Thank you.
I didn’t expect to find these ph/ hardness levels due to other sources stating it’s much lower (I understand this may be just a certain tributary of the Rio Ucayali.

Is this river one that fish are not normally collected from? I’m having a super hard time trying to find photos of older H. Temporalis collected from this river

Some updated images. Excuse the particles they were taken just after feeding time, as well as the algae on the glass. These guys are absolute pigs. It is comical to watch them turn really dark and stake out a territory full of pellet food from the other cichlids in the tank. They change their colours so much from dark when staking out a territory, sometimes showing the horizontal baring and sometimes not. They will search all over the tank substrate after feeding time not leaving anything behind. I have noticed that one or two prefers to eat from the surface and the rest are not phased by feeding from the substrate.
So far they have been on a diet of pellets, live blackworms, and frozen foods like white and black mosquito larvae (I have other frozen and freeze dried foods just haven’t had the chance to feed them yet) I am trying to keep their diet highly varied. So far they are fitting in really well only displaying con specific aggression every now and then, unless one of the other fish tries to start something they will defend themselves ?
