Hi,

My wild oscar is just like this one,

but ive seen alot of wild oscars wild some red on them like these,

will these slowly develop like the looks of this one is ?

mines the boss of the tank aswell so i cannot think why he wouldetn colour up properly ?

thanks

thats a good question that I'm not sure of. i would assume that it would be like other fish, color can be determined by their diet. ie: carotin brings out pinks/reds. congratz on getting a wild oscar tho. been wanting a few for a while.

as an after thought i would be proud of the one in the first picture, kinda uncommon no? like seeing common (in the hobby) species with uncommon colors/patterns

Simple Question for you.

Where was your Oscar collected from?

Right. Different localities will possess different traits. Here's a Peru Oscar:

The Oscar Fish, was described by Agassiz in 1831. What i consider to be truly wild Oscars, are found in South America; the Amazon River Basin, the Parana, the Rio Paraguay, and the Rio Negro.

They live in the slow moving waters of rivers, canals and ponds with muddy or sandy bottoms, feeding on small fish, crayfish, worms and insect larvae.

They have been introduced into natural waterways in China, Australia, and Florida USA as a what i consider to be an invasive, of the aquarium trade, Folks that have bought them as cute little 3 inch babys, then found they could not afford to, or simply didnt want to provide adequate housing so they got tossed into whatever water body was available, as is the case with many tropical species in the aquarium trade in the warmer waters of Florida etc.

They havent been able to expand into many non-native areas because they are intolerant of cooler water temperatures. They are really valued as a food fish in South America.

The truely wild caught species are usually dark colored with a little orange around their gill area and on the sides towards the back, and an orange-ringed black spot at the base of their caudal fin. They can change colors rapidly when becoming upset. Im sure all Oscars keepers have witnessed the pouting black or dark colored fish laying motionless on the bottom of their tanks. Juveniles have white and orange wavy bands or stripes and have spots on their heads.

Well now he has got bigger and still looks like the top picture one the to oscars have paired up and took over the large bogwood in my tank, and have killed off some of my fish so im looking to move them on now, as i want to be able to keep more fish in my tank. hes around 7 inch atleast now and the red oscar is the same size.

He still hasent had any red colour come out yet , but hes got a yellow circle on his tail that has come out much brighter and clearer.

Hes feed cichlid pellets , prawns, he eats the catfish pellets for the plecos, blood worm and thats it i think.

and hes from jeff rapes ive been told from where i got him from .

Im gonna take a wild guess that maybe your tank isnt big enough for your listed fish:

1 wild oscar 6.5"
1 red oscar 6"
1 fire eel 10"
1 L-001 plec 10"
1 gibycept plec 4"
2 pictus catfish 3" and 4"
2 blue acara cichlids 4"and 3"
1 syno catfish 4"
1 lima shovel nosed catfish 7"

and there are possibly nitrate or stress issues, if hes not naturally supposed to look how he looks to you. You do have all these in a tank at least 180g right?
