This is like one I made years ago (thinking about making another one too), worked great...and looked nice too.

Do the buckets fit tightly in the filter tank?
not tight.
will show a pic of the filter and filter with a bucket in it in a bit. ;)
You could also use lids on the buckets and then plumb the return water to holes in the lids.
good idea.
not sure if i said it before but the overflow is a 4" pipe.
hard to plumb that to buckets lol or just to much.

Here's something I didn't think about and you didn't mention...Do the buckets fit tightly in the filter tank? It will work if they do. But you should make a square container for the filter floss. You could also use lids on the buckets and then plumb the return water to holes in the lids. The plumbing inside the filter does not need to be glued so it can be taken apart for cleaning. By putting the lids on the buckets, you can submerge them and have the water lettuce over the entire surface.
I agree if the buckets were to fit tightly then just go throught river rock first in your C shape and it should work fine. You could put some kind of hole with a restriction in it to get water out before the first bucket for the lettuce. Then you could just feel the flow and pressure coming out there to tell how clogged or "dirty" your filter is getting.

my pops had an idea to make a basket type thing to hold the media.
make basket the size of the filter box.
im thinking of ziptieing plastic lattice in the shape of a box to hold it all.
maybe notch the basket in one corner for the pump.
what about that idea?
:D

Pump inside the media basket?, and draw the water thru the media?

Should work fine, just use good (nylon reinforced) zipties. I made a temp filter for a pond that got constant sun & I used cheap ties, when I tried to pick it up for cleaning after two weeks it fell apart (what a mess).
