Hey all, well I lost my fahaka today and I am
Looking at replacements in my 7x2x2 comm tank.. I have 2 FX6’s running and some larger CA cichilds... I was wondering what was the best wolf fish species for the tank? I have been looking at Curupira and Malabaricus and was wondering what is people’s experiences and thoughts? Thanks

Mala will work. Long term curupira will work for a short period but will need to upgrade years from now.

I thought Curupira were smaller than malabaricus?
No. They have been reported over 2ft. Some private aquariums in Asia hold some large specimens. Malad kept long enough will get 20in.

As mentioned you’ll need an upgrade, imo for either species. But that’s literally years and years from now. Sooner for curu. Mala reported up to 24” curu up to 30”.

I got my curu at 7-8” had it for over three years probably closer to four, grew steadily to 15”. Didn’t seem to be slowing down anymore than it already was. But they get girthy. I didn’t feel like it ever was slow because it’d grow in length then get fat the lengthened out again making steady growth.

Okay final and important question as I am
Closing in on a few stick options for the tank re-scape/stock.... which species would you recommend as a centre peice fish with a emperor snakehead and some large CA cichilds? Plan is to upgrade to a 10x3x3 in the next 5-10 years anyway.. or sack it off and get a Mbu?

Wolves are not all that active. I had a black and mala. They were rocks until night lights came on. I'm a puffer guy so I'm going to vote mbu all day. Aside from that I really think a big black wolf is very impressive.

I don't know how it will behave with a snakehead though. They look somewhat similar

The snakehead is 18 inches (and tops out at around 24)so if I get a smaller curu then hopefully he will not push his luck! Also the snakehead generally stays at the top of the tank so hopefully limiting interactions.

Yeah I know what you mean, I am torn between a Mbu (to replace my beloved fahaka ) and going something new and get a curu which I have always wanted

Below is the beast emperor.. very Friendly and puffer like actually!
