I want to put sand in the bottom of my outdoor fish pond. Would it work ok?

Should be OK, will make a mess when you put it in unless well rinsed.

Buying bulk gravel from a garden center might be a cheaper option. Stilll dirty, but can be prerinsed in the driveway, if you get a delivery. Or, if you have a truck, get a ton or yard in the back and wash it will still in the truck.

Or, buy bags of pea gravel or wash river gravel from any Menards or such. Stab some holes in the bags and put the hose in it.

The best way to clean it is to put it in the pond during construction (or if possible drain the pond) so you can wash it a couple of times, put a trash pump in the low spot, and pump it out a few times. Repeat if necessary.

it works as well as it does in an aquarium setting just make sure you rinse out the sand heaavily of the sediment that floats in the water column by placining it in a tall bucket or trash can and then run the hose full blast through it and the unwanted stuff will overflow out of the container with the water, leaving behind what won't float in the water column. do this over your lawn or in a flower bed to conserve water, water plants while taking caare of substrate:naughty:, your done when the water column in the container becomes clear. make sure you move the sand around while doing this so it only needs to be done once. hope this helps

also keep the sand shifted in the pond by raking it once a week.

whatever you do try and rinse it several times like the other posters have said. I had my pond setup already and wanted to add river rock for look.

my pond had survived a recent monsoon/dust storm and cleared up in day so I figured I'd rinse the media and add in the rock after only one rinse of it. well needless to say my pond's filtration can handle a monsoon in day, but it took it 6 days to clear up from the rock.

so rinse it good.

thanks for the ideas! I have a plastic wheel barrel that I can rinse the sand in and then I will be able to move to the pond easily after it has been rinsed.
