hey guys.! i have been thinking for awhile.. i have been wanting fish again, but being fourteen, i do not have the money for the upkeep on two tanks, especially considering the troubles that i have with filters. anyways, i had this idea. i know that turtles eat fish. this is obvious, so don't say that. i understand that, no matter what i do, fish will be eaten. do you guys think that i could get a fish like, say, tetras that will group together and look out for each other? or maybe, i could get a kind of fish that breeds fairly easily so that they would just repopulate the tank? i have some driftwood and soon to be plants, so they do and will have places to hide. thanks for the help!!

It wouldn't be so much keeping fish more along the lines of providing the turtle with constant feeders. What's the tank size?

I have a Red Ear (which is surprisingly unaggressive and has only killed 1-2 fish in her lifetime), a Pink Bellied Side neck, and a Yellow Belly.

I thought about tetras, but what kind?

I heard good things about african cichlids as long as you can keep the water clean enough. I was told by more then 1 people that most are to fast for the turtle. Very few casulties.

It can be done. I have a 2 or 3" severum, a couple tetras with a painted turtle. I have kept a convict with 2 red ears and a razorback musk. The convict terrorized the musk that I gave the convict away. The only fish I have a hard time keeping with turtles is pleco. So if you want fish get ones that are quick and semi aggressive.

Nah don't bother. My 3 red ear slider ganged up on an 8 inch gold fish... so a school of tetra means nothing. First couple week they didn't bother the goldfish but they ate it eventually.

They are very curious reptiles. Any and ALL fish will eventually be on the menu. But it doesnt mean the turtle can catch them. Some of the african cichlids are seriously wicked fast. It would probably be the best bet especially if you give them plenty of hiding spots and obsticles.

If you get the 180 you could try to rescue a couple large oscars from a LFS, they can take a beating and there's the chance your turtles will get a test bite and not like them.
