Hello
This is my first post on here, so forgive if naive and hope posted in the right place.

I went to the LFS the other day and saw the cutest 1/2 inch yellow boxfish and immediately fell in love. I wouldn't be getting anytime soon but have fallen in love and really want to consider for next year perhaps.

My jaw dropped when I saw in the wild they get up to 18"! A magazine article that someone posted on another forum stated about in captivity an average of 6".

I basically would like to know any good links to read more on. What are peoples experiences of these in their tanks, size and how quickly they grow. what tank size would you recommend?

I am new to fish keeping. My first tank has dwarf puffers in who I am happy to say are thriving and I love, I have a 160 litre planning to set up for perhaps SAPs and am getting my partner a betta for his birthday (seem to have been bitten by the bug!). I plan as my absolute wish list for the furture to get a porcupine puffer which I believe alone needs 100 gallons US. Would the two be compatible what tank for the box fish singular or with a porcupine? I do not expect that these two will get along but though to ask.

Thank you very much for any help given!

My recommendation is they are pretty tough in captivity unless you have a tank at least 150 gallon plus they however have great personalities I have some good references I will post this evening when I get to my home for you.

Here is some information on the Lactoria cornuta aka longhorn cowfish what you saw in the store.

Brief description
This peaceful boxfish has a lot of personality and needs to be kept in a peaceful community aquarium. The horns can be accidentally caught in ornaments in the aquarium so steps must be taken to ensure the safety for this particular animal. Maximum size is 18 inch's with the cowfish, and is recommended for expert aquarist only. Minimum tank size 150 Gallons, very peaceful fish.

Diet
Feed a varied diet consisting of large chunks of meaty foods. These foods include krill, raw table shrimp, squid, clam and mussel. It is also a good idea to occasionally supplement with some type of herbivore diet containing marine algae.
The Longhorn Cowfish will learn to swim near the surface and spit water as a form of begging at feeding time. This begging behavior, though cute, should be discouraged as it may swallow air and cause buoyancy problems.

some other link's for you if you still wanna persue this fish

Hi MrReef - thank you very very much for the links they make great reading.

In the meantime I found this link in the meantime:
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/boxfishes.htm

there are so many varieties that I did not know of!

Can I ask do you know anything on the reticulated boxfish? The following information was provided on this site:
Ostracion solorensis Bleeker 1852, the Reticulate Boxfish. Indo-Australian. To four inches in length. A great beauty and good choice for home aquarists. More and more available. A photo of a female Gili Air, Lombok, Indonesia, and male in S. Sulawesi.

I am based in UK and only seen the yellow spotted and cow horn ones. Are they more readily available? Thank you for all the information so far,I really love puffers and boxfish and would love to have a boxfish. A smaller one such as this I would be willing to set up a tank for itself, though would not know what size would be needed?

just to add, boxfish release toxic chemicals into the water if they are stressed or when they die. These chemicals can kill your livestock
