Isla Taboga Panama via Milwaukee
Caught the other day in the Rio Los Lotes, Panama, although a member of the Characins, it is separated from Tetras into the family Curimatadae, and is the only representative of that group found this far north into Central America. Its closest relatives being the Prochilodus, (flag tails) and Anostomids (head standers) of South America.
They were mostly found in the middle of the river, over sandy areas, in large shoals..

Being the dry season, The Rio Los Lotes was only half its normal width, and from the look of its exposed banks, much more shallow than normal.
pH @ 8.2, and no detectable nitrates
IMG_6986.jpeg
Many Cyphocharax that were caught, seemed plagued by the parasite, Lernaea
IMG_5508.jpegIMG_4880.jpeg
Other fish species caught with them were
Andinoacara ceorleopunctatus, Ctenolucius beanii, Isthmoheros tuyrense, a number of tetras, and 2 species of Gobies
