I recycle lots of old lumber that has plenty of use left in it when building my stands, or salvage it from work. I havent had to buy anything except plywood for paneling recently.
I dont know if everyone wants to sit in a 78-80 degree room but it works out depending where ur tank is.
Hobby pays for itself. I breed fish, raise aquarium plants and live food cultures (daphnia, white worms, grindal worms,microworms) that I sell at monthly fish club meetings and tropical fish auctions.
Nutrient control and water changes efficiency. Sand from leslies pool supply, rocks from the river, driftwood from the river, & most importantly planning ahead for the long term.
There's nothing that's eat up my budget worst than buying a 75 when I need a 125 etc etc. Canisters are another money waster. If an aquaclear won't get the job done then you need a drilled tank with sump. The black hole nitrate factory hidden under your stand eats up your water quality.

Same here, build my stand out of scrap wood used to build the fish room.
Understock, go heaterless (choosing fish that will thrive at room temperature throughout the year)
