This is the filter for my 300. I suppose I could try to make it simpler :D but lots of people would tell you you need to make it much more complicated.

I would use a 40 gallon sump and 2 fx5 but that's my opinion and what I did on my 360...

For my 340, heres my sump. 145g. 3 chambers, 2 with 800 scrubbies total 1 for pump return. I also run 2 FX5s full of media and 2x 100 micron sump socks. Also use 2 Koralia 1200 for additional water circulation. There are those who run much more sophisticated filtration but I will let them chime in on there setups.

Big sump or wet dry. Water changes are really important. I'm running a 100g sump with 20l pond matrix and a bunch of ceramic I just keep adding a little at a time. I keep 2 big sponge filters also incase anything ever happened to my sump. I have a 5500 gph pump, and have been thinking of adding a very large canister also for mech. I average over 300g per week in water changes which I think are probably one if not the most important part

Here is mine very easy to maintain with the filter socks doing all the mechanical filtration

I have since installed a spray bar over the drip plate and added some more 1" pvc for support between chambers

two 7" 100 micron socks and around 1,000 pot scrubbers 2/3 of which are submerged

I don't know if there is a best filter they pretty much all but not all do the same thing, bio and polish. Just make sure that it can cope with the load [no pun intended ] it will have to deal with plus some.
