I've received one large wild male A. labiatus 'true red devil' in return trade. Originally arrived to me via last import I received from Nicaragua in spring.
He's a very attentive, deeply colored dude who's been actively breeding for previous owner.
10" fish @ 100

IMG_8189.JPG

Also have one young adult male N. haitiensis to spare of 5" @ 75

hait5.jpg

^ Thanks-I am sold already :) ^

Have one big P. splendida 'green' or 'wild form' of 9-10" @ 75

splend.grn.jpg

And one very impressive pair of Acaronia nassa originally imported on a previous Brazil shipment and collected from Roraima state in N. Brazil.
They are 6-8" @ 125 pr
Female shown in photo with male's big glowing yellow eye seen at right. He was spooked by camera flashes and I didn't hang around long enough to wait for him to come out of hiding. May try again later.

So about those oscars I mentioned in title...
I took some recent photos of the wild oscars that I've imported from Brazil. They were originally collected from the island of Marajo in Para state of Brazil.
These fish average 7-8" size @ 75 each. Remarkable variation from one individual to the next. Their patterns are transient as well - highly mood dependent.

Another wild-type oscar I have on hand is the 'red tail Bahia' race. As indicated by the trade name given to them, they are originally collected in the Brazilian state of Bahia.
Below are several photos of these fish from juvenile to mature adult.
Here is what they looked like upon arrival at about 3-3.5" size.

osc.bahia4.jpg

Here is a current photo of them of 5-6" size @ 28 ea. or > 4 fish @ 25 ea.
They are in their 'gawky, adolescent stage' at this point. Even oscars experience this outwardly awkward, not-yet-mature pattern/coloration. Just another reason, I'll surmise, why so many oscar fans find them endearing.

osc.bahia5.jpg

Just for reference, below are photos of a breeding pair I've taken in my facility.

And just as a snap preview of what's to come (tomorrow, 12/30 actually), here are some photos of the 'bumble bee oscar', a wild form I've originally imported from Sao Paulo state of Brazil in years past.
I'll start with juvenile photos and work our way up to adult pics.

Below is the current stock list as per today, 12/29/13
I realize there are many species with no exact size and price indicated.
The size and price of the above 'bumble bee oscars' and all others due on the 30th will be posted upon arrival to my stock list.
I will post an updated version of that list here on MFK as well. For now, at least you can see what's on hand and what's immediately due.

I breed these 'platinum Honduran red points' here. The scales on this pair are so reflective that it's hard to catch the coloration with flash going off on camera.
These are such a beautiful md-growing cichlid to keep and they are really undemanding as well.

e.maculatus.jpg

e.mac.e.canar.jpg

Couple of Asian cichlids in photo: the small growing red/orange chromide and the rarely offered banded Indian chromide.
Really, there are only 3 Asian cichlids anyhow. The only one missing from discussion is E. suratensis, the green chromide.

Funny thing with E. canarensis - this species has been known to science for a long time, but unknown in the tropical fish trade until relatively recently.
When I still worked for an importer in the 1990s, I had asked the current shipper from India if he knew of the fish. Yes, he said, but they are only found in a very remote region several days travel from anywhere that his fisherman would commercially collect fish.
We arranged a fee that would cover the days expenses regardless of the fisherman's success or failure to bring back any live E. canarensis.
They had some success fishing on that trip.
I believe that 5 or 6 individuals out of several dozen survived the several days transit time from collection point to exporter's facility.
Those individuals were included on subsequent wholesale export order to NJ and survived the shipping just fine.

I brought them home and kept them for several years. While I was never able to successfully bred any from that first batch to enter the US, I did photograph them.
Upon submitting and having a canarensis photo published in Cichlid News magazine, I received a phone call from one of Sven Kullander's graduate students at the University in Sweden.
Apparently not a single pickled specimen of this species was even on hand in all the museums and universities in India at this time. He'd tried to obtain a type specimen previously for studies - to no avail.
No importers in Europe or Asia had yet brought them in to anyone's knowledge then either.

So the call was one of disbelief in that I was questioned: "From where did you obtain a live photo of this species? Did any die during transit that may be preserved for study?"
I didn't donate any of the live specimens I had because I didn't know if or when I'd ever see them again. Besides, I really thought I'd eventually see a spawn from them.

Luckily there have been subsequent collections of this attractive chromide, although not of any regularity or quantity.
And there have been successful breeding efforts from time to time as well now. The fish currently on hand are the result of captive breeding success.

Yet another small growing, brightly colored cichlid - this one from western Africa.
Coined the 'butterfly cichlid', this peaceful little species has been in the trade since the early years of captive tropical fish maintenance.

The brilliantly colored 'turquoise jewel' is like a glowing aquatic light bulb. They are a md growing, fairly easy going species - great for mixed communities of md growing species.

The 'stellifer jewel' is yet another brightly colored, md growing, great compliment to mixed md-lg communities.

teugelsi.jpg

The bichir native to Cross River in Cameroon is a rarely seen species in the trade. Here are F1 captive bred juveniles available at this time.
This is a particularly attractive species sporting an orange belly with intricate black lattice markings on top side.

These are pics taken of the most recent batch of 'bumble bee oscars' that I have on hand now.
Wild type oscars can have the most incredible patterns and colors!

While I have not photographed every tank of juvenile cichlids that I've recently added to my stock list, I can share some sub adult and adult pics for reference.
After all, juveniles of most of these American species are really nothing more than cryptically colored, silver-looking little fish! It's the adult or mature coloration for which we value them as attractive aquarium fish.
Here are some examples.
