hi guys im new to this site this is my 1st post here

i have just bought a juvenile murray cod and a barramundi they are living together at the moment with a few small arguments but nothing serious as of yet in a 3ft by 2 ft tank will be seperating when they are older

reason for my post is i have never had native fish before
and they both refuse to eat pellets floating or sinking so ive been catching feeder fantails my main concern is i would hate for ether of my natives to get a disease i really dont want to force them on to pallets rather keep them on live food but i am very worryed about disease's and need some information on what i can do to help prevent that

also is it ok just to feed them live food im also worryed about nutrition as i want them to last a long time and get fully grown quick as possible

i also have a 4 ft tank with a 38cm symphilum and have about 20 of its offspring with it it xbreaded with a flowerhorn witch was intresting i very rarly feed live food to them mainly pellets and bloodworm and gecko's

any information will be very helpfull also if any one else has had a murray cod before or a barra maybe share some pointers with me on keeping them healthy thank you .

Can't give you any info on the fish as i don't know much about them except that they taste good as the fish & chip shop...

But to answer your question on feeders, the best bet is to breed your own feeders for your fish, preferably something that breeds fast... otherwise, you could always buy live feeders and then quarantine them for at least 2 weeks to check for potential problems and medicate as needed...

Although in all honesty, i would still try and steer away from live feeder fish if possible... maybe have a look at what they eat in nature... coz you might find you can feed your fish De-frosted Scallops, Mussels, Market Shrimp as an alternative... but wait till some one with more experience with these fish give you some better info...

Hey bud if you get no answers here try the thread entitled: Aussie native stocking, alot of aussie native obsessed keepers.

Or you could try the link on the bottom of my page if youre on facebook. :)

if you do decide to breed fish for feeders, as far as i've heard, convicts breed like crazy.
i'm getting a pair of convicts from my LFS once my tanks cycled, and she commented they spawn like crazy and MIGHT be interested in trading the fry (hey if i get free fish food of them no worries) so they can sell them as feeders.

thanks im seting up a bath tub in back yard atm got 1 today also going to build a pond adventualy this is just a quick fix for now the bath tub funny you said about convicts i could have got 10 of them from a colony off a mate a few months ago as he changed the type of fish he wanted i just had no room to put them anywhere cuase i was living in a unit at the time

for now i just need to work out how im going to filter the bath tub i read somewhere if u add salt to the water so much per G/ltr it helps get rid of any diseased fish but have no idea how much also read that your ment to add a slight bit of salt for the cod but never said how much exactly

these fantail fish seem to breed rapidly just catching from a water way geting around 2000 at a time in 10 to 15 mins

the barra is eating about 15 to 25 a day over 24hrs im guessing the cod is doing about the same i have tryed the pellets a fair few times when ive been out of live food but they wuld rather starve then eat it they went hungry for about 1 week trying to get them to eat them so i gave up also tryed diffrant brands as well and size's

i might give the seafood a try

i will go have a look at those threads you posted hopefully somehing to help me there

well im going to most likely sell my symplilum from my 4ft tank and put the cod in there but adventuly im geting a 4th fish tank the 1 i got lined up is decent enough for the price of $350 last time i was there i had him down to $250 for it but was short 50 bucks its 6 ft by 3/half ft wide 3ft high 16mil glass he just builds tanks on the side from offcuts im guessing from his job also does custom builds for you at a low price pretty much what the glass would cost you the tanks all look pretty flush and he not stingy on the silicon on his builds does nice braceing as well mate few months ago got a custom tank built off him is 10ft long by 5 wide not sure of the height only charged 900 for it. got full set up in his shed but its salt water its slowly geting there thou looks pretty nice

as for the barra etehr going to put it in the pond or buy anoutehr 1 of those tanks then set the 3ft what they are in atm into a salt water tank but nothing is definate atm

got a 1/half ft tank atm setup as salt as a trial and error seem to be doing ok with it
i set all the salts and stuff up right and you guys going to luagh but as trail fish im useing 3 toad fish lmao there pretty hardy also got a salt water mud crab in there and a few rock crabs and a mud skipper none have died yet except a few crabs cuase they got eaten

Try green prawns, my Murray Cod snaps them up! I just pull the head shell off to get rid of the spike and feed whole.
