Congrats dennisdeng!

I don't know what the follow up post with "R&R HOF" meant, but you'd already nailed that question anyhow with your answers:

'The Who' (drummer Keith Moon left us in '78 and bassist John Entwhistle in '02)
'Grateful Dead' (Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan in '73 and our beloved Jerry Garcia in '95 - that was a VERY sad day indeed)
'Jimi Hendrix' of course left us too soon - only 1 year after his Woodstock gig
and from the band 'Santana', bassist David Brown past in '00.

It's very sad that so many of those original performers past as they did.
They lived and played hard - too hard for a body to withstand in many cases.

Just to mention a few better known names:

Bert Sommer (as already pointed out) in '90
Tim Hardin '80
Janis Joplin '70
Paul Butterfield '87
Rick Danko (of the Band) '99
Felix Pappalardi's (of Mountain) wife shot him dead in '83
Tom Fogerty, (of Creedence Clearwater Revival) brother of John Fogerty, lost battle with AIDS in '90
plus too many other great musicians - all succumed to drug/alcohol related deaths. Each one a tradgedy and each loss a terrible waste.

Hey, on the bright side, many musicians' careers took off as a result of the Woodstock Festival.

And did anyone know that Ravi Shanker (said to be the greatest sitar player in the world - who had played on many Beatles recordings prior to his Woodstock gig) is the father of Nora Jones?!

Thanks to everyone who participated and to all who read the thread.
I thought that posting photos taken from that weekend would be fun.
Can you just imagine the scene, the vibe, the mud, the smell, the memories?!

Peace

So Jeff, where were you in Aug. 69?
My parents wouldn't let me attend. No matter how much I begged and pleaded, they told me no. A three year old ;) has no business thumbing a ride to upstate NY, most likely in some chartreuse microbus, to hang with all those long haired friends of Jesus.

Just thought I would add a couple more who passed so early.
Feel free to do so.

Remember any of these names?

Roy Orbison
Elvis
John Lennon
George Harrison
Linda McCartney
'Johnny and Joey' Ramone
Warren Zevon (Aaooohhhh)
Frank Zappa
Buddy Rich
Duane Allman
Bo Didley
Jim Croce
Bob Marley
Otis Reading
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Sid Vicious
Syd Barret
Johnny and June Cash
Cass Elliot
Buddy Holly
Ronnie Van Zandt, Steve and Cassie Gaines
Harry Chapin
John Bellushi
Marvin ***e
Andy and Maurice Gibb
Pappa John Creach
Waylon Jennings
Brent Myland, Keith Godchaux, and Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan- Jeez! Mama, don't let your babies grow up to be keyboard players for the Grateful Dead. It'll surely land you steady job of pushing up dasies in the boneyard.

Take away the planes, helicopters, guns, drugs and booze - and most of these folks would still be making music!

The Righteous Brothers tune "Rock and Roll Heaven" is a great listen.
It was written and recorded shortly after the deaths of the below artists. Their names in particular were in listeners hearts and heads at the time the song was released.

"Jimi gave us rainbows" is Jimi Hendrix.
"Janis took a piece of our hearts" is Janis Joplin.
"Otis took us all to the dock of the bay" is Otis Redding.
"Remember Jim that way" is Jim Morrison.
Second verse: "Jimmy touched us with that song" is Jim Croce.
"Bobby gave us 'Mack the Knife'" is Bobby Darin.

Stephen King (who absolutely rocks on many levels) wrote a short story in which Rock and Roll Heaven can be found at the end of long, lesser traveled rural road in Oregon.

And you know they got a hell of a band!

Hey. I see you there in the blue shirt!

A lifetime of first hand memories, the jealousy of millions of others who were born too late to go.
