Most times they die before that because people fail to meet their salinity requirements.. They are technically a saltwater fish, however they are anadromous and breed in FW and are easily collected and distrubited as juvies.

They are FW as juvies, move up to brackish levels when they are in the 2-4" range, and would eventually graduate to full saltwater. This is just the 'theory' of how to properly keep GSPs, and it has been proven succesful as many people have used this method and raised GSPs to adulthood.

If you think about it in the wild though, they would likely make an immediate switch rather than 'lingering' around in Brackish water for a few years. Either way, the primary concern is the fish need some salinity content, with a high pH. This helps osmoregulation and makes it so the puffer does not have to work as hard to process nutrients and salt.

Sure, they can likely tolerate a wide range of salinity levels, at just about any size.. But they won't thrive or live as long as they should.
