My 1000 Gallon Glass Aquarium (1000+ Gallons for Dummies)

Like several others, I lost one of my pinima. It was 12.5", and a sad day when I came home from work and found it belly up in the pond. Initially, I thought it was a water quality issue. But after talking to some others, and seeing my other pinima's behaviour in the tank, I tend to think it was fighting with other fish...likely the bigger tems. I also came close to losing my 11" Rio Meta orino in the pond after it refused anything but live in the pond for literally months. It was emaciated when I put it in the tank. Fortunately, it has started eating pellets in the tank quite well and is now making a slow but promising recovery.

All of the other fish are doing great. I will likely be changing my stocking. I'll likely only keep one of the mutts that most resembles a pure mono or ocellaris (still haven't figured out what they are), the better colored of the two CB kelberi Bahias (one is much better colored), and one or two of the seven(!) temensis spp. I currently have. I'm also going to grow out a pair of azuls and brokos to add, and there is a couple of nice pleiozonas near me that keep coming up for sale that I would like to snag. Basically, I'd like to have one or two of each species of bass in the tank. I really enjoy the opportunity to look at the different spp. in the same tank. I'll eventually post pictures of all my fish as well. Cheers.

Do you have an estimate of the volume of your decorations? Those rocks and the tree are huge, probably 100+ gallons of space? Did you take the lower actual water volume into account for designing the filtration system?

I'm hoping in a year or two to do a much smaller project. Essentially a 300 gallon with a 3d amazon log background (which is off the shelf) but don't really know how to treat it for deciding on filtration.

The rocks and the tree are hollow. There is also water behind the background and even under the bottom, giving it a nice undulating appearance. I don't think there is much to it all. Nonetheless, it all adds up and may displace 100g cumulatively. It's a lot less than you would think looking at the pictures though that's for sure.

Hey Wes. I thought we had discussed this thread months ago. I'm all in for whatever you can find me. I'm going to put a 275g in the stand under the tank to grow out the brooks, azuls, and whatever else you can find me. ;)

Well, I spent most of my limited free time this weekend working on the lighting. What I've settled on is four rows of T5 HO lighting from front to back. Each row will be comprised of a 3'/4'/3' ballast arrangement. I'm using the Hagen GLO ballasts as I already have quite a few from my old rack set up. This should put me at 1056 Watts total. My biggest problem is finding more ballasts, and the fact that I am waiting for new plexi lids to come from the builder. I did manage to complete the right column of 3' ballasts and half of the middle. The lighting seems a lot better now. Sorry I didn't take pictures of the LED's. They were a nice setup and had some really cool features. But in the end they looked like crap. They certainly didn't live up to the hype on my tank. I do have a couple of metal halides on the shelf and may try them just for giggles. The cost to operate isn't a big concern to me...I want what looks the best. Anyways, I took a few more teaser pics under the good lighting. My iPhone never seems to take good pictures like others'. I'll break out the Canon DSLR when the time comes...

Original quick lighting when set up.

oh yeah!!!!

Thanks Dave. Your tanks looks good as well. Glad to see the sump is working for you, and I love your stocking. I have too have a black aro and a solitary geo that survived a sulfuric acid spike when I foolishly stirred up the long-standing sand bed in his tank. Cheers.
