There is a non invasive way to check, if said fish is food motivated to a point already. My Oscar would stare at the waters surface till food hits. With this I could position her in a way to get pic of the area in question.
If the holes are simular is size then it's male, one bigger as seen here it's female.
Anecdotally it is said that in males the dorsal and anal fins overlaps the tail fin. My Oscar was female and her fins didn't overlap at all.
Lastly females are said to be more egg shaped in general vs males being more elongated. They also take alot more time than let's say Amphilophus, that sexually mature at around the 3in size. Oscar's take 1.5 years to mature so some of the slight body differences take time to actually appear.
