I’m trying to learn more about the L299 “bleached pleco”. Planet catfish says the juvenile color differs “greatly” compared to the adults, but offers no clues as to what the differences are.
Does anyone know if these plecos lose their color as they grow? Or do the patterns of the “bleaching” just change?
Is there anyone here that has kept them long enough to experience this change that can shed some light on this for me?

Here’s a reference photo of the juvenile for those that haven’t heard of it:

I think you mean L229? They're pretty cool; had the opportunity to observe them a couple times in various LFSs and a friend's tank.
They get disappointingly dark brown in colour, with the faintest outline of large spots; occasionally their juvenile blotched pattern might be outlined but similar to most other L#s it's usually when they're on lighter substrate or stressed.
Think there was a pic online of a nice ~30cm specimen somewhere; can't find it right now, though.

Oh shoot, yes that’s the one I meant! Too late to edit of course!
My fear was that they lose the blotching and get all brown. How disappointing indeed.

I kept one until about 4” and he remained the same color as when I first got him.
