Curious if these things are for real and if so, are they legal in CA? Seem like an excellent food supply. Thanks for any help monsterfrens...o7

Just looked it up, it seems they are illegal in California. P. alarkii and P. alleni also breed rather fast but parthenogenesis is rare in them.

What he said ?. illegal in most states. California is probably the only one that will actively knock your door in to confiscate.

Yes they're real. They also go by the name Marmorkrebs. I used to keep them in a 40 gal to feed my Fahaka until they were made illegal here (Winnipeg, Canada) for obvious reasons. They come from Germany if I recall.

You’d be surprised. There are a number of fish and reptiles that are capable of it.
It's referred to as parthenogenesis, quite common in some reptiles like Komodo dragons. Some animal groups become exclusively female and clonal, this is generally detrimental for long term survival of the species as it kneecaps their adaptive ability!
