What does that photo have to do with this thread?!
I took that standing outside my facility a couple weeks ago when we were experiencing the deep freeze.
Such an unlikely place for all these tropical fish.

I brought in an import of wild Costa Rica fish last week. To my knowledge, this is the first commercial import of freshwater fish from this country to arrive in the US.
While many of the species were collected in only small quantities (and subsequently were sold out quickly), others are still available in ample quantity for now.
There will be forthcoming imports including a greater variety of species.
Additionally, I will be headed there in April to collect from specific areas in search of other species that may not be accessible or feasibly collected commercially.

Here are some of the highlights from this initial import.

A. alfari is a seldom offered Costa Rican species, but to have access to legitimately wild collected stock of known location is a very rare opportunity indeed.
This species is relatively mild mannered and very brightly colored. They grow to about 7-8" TL.

Above are photos of the wild convicts collected from Rio Tempisque. This river flows south and empties into the Gulf of Nicoya.
My point for making reference to this fact lies in the interesting relationship of this convict to another Costa Rican-collected race of A. siquia from the Rio Cabuya which originates on the Nicoya Peninsula and also empties into the same small Gulf of Nicoya.
So are these the same fish? Time will tell - as in once these Rio Tempisque collected siquia grow larger and fully mature.
For comparison, below are current photos of a large pair of A. siquia from Rio Cabuya that I maintain and breed in my facility.

No matter if they do turn out to the be this very same fish or a new race to the hobby, they are certainly not your average commercially bred/retail offering of convict cichlids!

Above are photos of the barred midas collected from two locations. The red breast and flanks is very 'red Isletas-looking'. I see a lot of potential for big, bad, barred midas with red in these fish!

The 'rose breast cichlids' (A. longimanus), 'rainbow cichlids' (A. multispinosus), and 'flier cichlids' (A. centrarchus) arrived in only small quantity, sold very quickly, and are expected to be collected again for upcoming imports.

The 'cubera snapper' (L. cyanopterus) is an incredible monster fish that many sport fisherman will be familiar with!
A large growing, deep red-colored, large toothed beast that also makes an excellent meal. Feel free to 'google' images and you'll see what I mean.

To see them offered in the aquarium trade is extremely rare. These juvenile fish were collected in the mouth of a freshwater river where it empties into an estuarine environment.
In other words, there were trace amounts of salt in the area where these fish were collected. Juveniles of this species are frequently caught far inland in completely fresh water environments as well.
I have a trace amount of salt in their tank at this time and they are totally thriving and feeding really, really well!

There were also collected a few juvenile grey snapper (L. griseus) at the same time. I've maintained this species in my own aquariums for many months in straight fresh water. It ate everything I offered it and I enjoyed the fish very much.

What colorful gobies! These 'Pacific fat head gobies' simply glow in the tank! I can't wait to add this species to one of my home aquariums.
They chow down on any pellets I throw at them and are found in and maintained in straight fresh water.

Here's a very active, true Central American tetra that will add activity and interest to any medium sized community tank.
They are iridescent green and really tough to capture in a photo (for me, anyhow).

I'm sorry my photos do no justice to this species of live bearer.
Again, please feel free to 'google' images of Brachyrhaphis holdridgei for better photos of this stunning little beauty.
