Brycon Availability Question

How many species of Brycon have currently entered the hobby/trade?

Inquiring due to the fact that the genus has numerous species and the ID on a lot of the Brycon I see on MFK is something I need help in clarifying on.

I haven't seen very many different types offered for sale.There does not seem to be a very big demand for them either.

Well it's safe to say that Melanopterus, Hilarii and Dentex are in the trade with Whitii a distinct possibility, though Ive not seen one in a tank. However, many different species are sold under the name Melanopterus- any Brycon with black/dark tail seems to get labelled as such so I don't know that you'll get a definitive answer.

I've only seen supposed dentex in the trade. We get them fairly regularly at my LFS. No MFKers seem to like them, but they sell fast to people who think they are barracudas and can be mixed with their large oscars regardless of me telling them "they are not aggressive and not true barracudas".

Pretty interesting. How much do they regularly go for and how large do they normally come in?

not off the top of my head. I've seen Melanopterus, some labled as Sp. Sao Francisco, Brycon Amazonicus and I'm sure there are others.

Do any of these other species hold certain characteristics that would help to differentiate them from melanopterus?

I think Jelly has Melanopterus, Sao Fransisco and Hilarii- the SF variety seem to develop brown fins rather than black and some colour in their fins. The Amazonicus are very similar;

Images are from google and in fact, through searching, there is also Brycon Falcatus and Cephalus to add to the list of possibly confused with Melanopterus-

Ok, so next to each other there are noticable differences but likewise, there are a lot of similarities. And there maybe other species.
