I bought mine the first and only time it came up. Ended up selling it because it was mean. Only other time I saw them was when one of the big places here got them in and Jelly bought those!

I got my Hilarii recently from someone and if I had the choice again, I'd go for Hilarii- better looking fish and they play a lot nicer.

Alot of the Brycon species are sold under the radar. For the most part these guys are picked up in collection trips, the dealers have no clue what they are and are sold under several names that are best guesses. Red Tail Cuda is a common name used so is dorado and south america tiger fish. I've seen Melanopterus and Cephalus, own Dentex.

I think Jelly has Melanopterus, Sao Fransisco and Hilarii- the SF variety seem to develop brown fins rather than black and some colour in their fins. The Amazonicus are very similar;

Mela-

Amazonicus-

Images are from google and in fact, through searching, there is also Brycon Falcatus and Cephalus to add to the list of possibly confused with Melanopterus-

Falcatus-

Cephalus-

Ok, so next to each other there are noticable differences but likewise, there are a lot of similarities. And there maybe other species.

Hey mynheers whats the difference between the mela and the amazonicus? Im just wondering because I thought mine was a melanopterus but it looks more like the pic of the amazonicus. He has that reddish color on his face and his black markings arent as neat as the first pic.
