Monster Catfish!

OK, I may have done something really foolish...
Went to collect an eBay purchase of a 7' x 2' x 2' tank yesterday and while there found an algae covered 4' x 2' tank with a pair of ID sharks swimming round and around.
They were both very healthy and looked pretty smallish through the murky glass.
I knew the home I was offering was not really ideal for them long term but it had to be better than what they were homed in..
Bagged them up and brought them home and put them in the 5ft tank while I re-enforce the floor ready for the new tank.
One is around 18", on is around 16" but look HUGE compared to my TSN (he's around 9") and Oscars.
I know they do not grow fast, but how fast is 'fast'?
I do not plan on keeping them, I hope to find a good home for them but I couldn't bring myself into leaving them there.
But in the mean time, while I am fostering them, could someone please give me some advice on how to look after them?

wallago's or tapah's, whatever name you choose to call them by. they get about 6 feet and very aggresive,
wallago size depends on sub species. one sub species can reach up to to and over 6 feet in the wild but due to over fishing in its habitat the average size seen is around 2-4 feet. be assured though these guys can be VERY aggressive and the big one have been known to eat dogs and small children.
Great job on this thread necro, I couldn't stop reading it! Also, awsome input from everyone else...very informative. Right now I don't have any monsters (just some mini-monsters: mollies/goldfish), but one day I'd like to get an I.D....when I have the money and space for one of course 
Catfishes are a diverse group of ray-finned fish. I have 3 pangasius all 1 year old and none are bigger than 6 inch. They are in a 4 foot tank, anything bigger and they'd kill themselves picking up too much speed. When they get less skittish I'll put them in a pond, at the moment I know they'd jump out.
A 7 foot tank is ok for an 18" ID. They tend to spend most of the time in the same place. It's the similar Paroon and Bocourti that gives them a bad rep.
Lets see pictures of your Wallago.
You mentioned sub species do you keep these also?
