So I spent some time looking for information on the perpendicular compression strenght of plywood to no luck. I wanted to build my stand for my 240 out of birch ply but could not fin any information on it's perpendicular compression strength so I scrapped it for a 2x4 stand. Now with the work I have put into it I am very satisfied. However I am still looking for information on the strength of plywood.
Given the construction of almost every stand I've seen in stores, I'm inclined to think that 3/4" ply, when properly assembled, can hold just about anything.

That's not to say I'm willing to try it on my own, though. Members much smarter than I could run the actual numbers.

I'll see if I can dig up the plywood numbers. I'm pretty sure I have them stashed away somewhere. I was working on a DIY Plywood tank calculator, so it should be there.

Does anyone know what this stand is made out of ? It appears to be 8 1x3 ? if so it looks like a strong stand for 240 gal. I like the look of smaller wood.

It is hard to say what that is made of without seeing the inside or having up close pictures. Is is store bought?

is there a way to tell if a stand will hold up if it's an older stand? mine has 6 pieces of 2x4's holding it up. and the stand has a sticker that says "Custom Built by LEE-MAR". the stand is probably 10 or so years old. not sure

Not really. If the stand appears to be solid, it is likely OK. Just check for rotted or water damaged wood.
