I'm not sure what All-Aquatics is selling with their RTLs.

"Includes 3 ounce 100% polyester filter media cartridges.

If desired, 100 micron screen cartridges are available.

Each unit contains a spring actuated by-pass allowing 100% filtration of the water on low speed pumps.

For 100% filtration at all times, the by-pass can be replaced with a supplied plug. "

I don't know what the polyester filter media cartridges are. I think the 100 micron cartridges are the spa filter cartridges, but it looks like you have to purchase them separately from All-Aquatics. :(

How tall would your sump have to be to effectively use a 32" sock?
My sump is only 20"H and and the water level is maybe 14". These are 32" filter socks and they work well. To clean them I soak them in bleach, hose them off with a "Jet" nozzle and soak them again in a bucket of Prime treated water to get rid of any residual bleach. They are tougher to clean than the standard flat felt pads that I used to use above the wet/dry chamber in my old sump, but still a lot easier than having to disasemble a canister.

Pacu Mom, thanks for this information. I think I'm going to order one of the RTL 100's to replace my two NuClears on my 450. I'm changing the filters on my NuClears every two weeks now and it's a PITA.......

I would go with the 100% filter option and plug the "by-pass". What low speed pump would you use for this set up?

Where do you buy your filters? It doesn't sound like you use All-Aquatics......

Thanks for any information you have!

Doviiman is also in the process of revamping his mechanical filtration. I have no idea what All-Aquatics is selling--it appears that they are selling something other than the 100 micron filter cartridges, because those are optional. I think you need to contact them and pick their brains. I told Fred to do the same thing.

It sounds like they tweaked the RTL to be more palatable for fishkeepers, with the low speed option, etc. RTLs are high volume filters (100 gpm), but not all fishkeepers can have such high flow rates in their tanks.

The RTLs purchased from spa stores come with a 100 micron cartridge.

This is the site I purchased my RTLs from
http://www.spapartsshop.com/PentairRainbowRTLSeriesTopLoadInlineFilter.aspx

I didn't know that there were free-standing bases for these units until I read the All-aquatics site. The base did not come with my RTLs, so I purchased them after I learned of them. I like the idea of them just sitting on the floor. You can get the by-pass assembly, etc. from this site. This vendor gives good service and the second best price I found online (cheapest vendor couldn't get the RTLs for me in a timely manner)

I have no idea what the 3 oz filter media cartridge is--it seems to be listed for all the RTL models...doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Hopefully, All-Aquatics can answer your questions. Please share what you find out. I'm using RTLs in a spa manner (high volume with the 100 micron cartridges), but perhaps there is a better way for aquarists. I'd like to know too, although I'm not likely to change how I use them since I love them just the way they come from the spa vendor.
