as above,
i googled 'huge fish tank' when i was planning to upgrade from my first 10 gallon tank about 2 years ago( i had bought a bala shark for a 12'' wide tank :)
i found your posts, joined MFK and really got inspired. i bought a 4ft tank, upgraded again to a 5ft, 90 gallon before coming across plywood tanks on the diy section.
So... i built my own and now have a 6ft, 220 gallon tank stocked with some cichlids( oscar, black diamonds, rainbow) , and two blue lobsters.
a quick question if i may, i noticed in some posts that you have kept both blue jack dempsey's and green terrors and am interested in both, just wondering how you found them and if you think they'll fit in with my existing stock?

Anyhow just thought id say a quick hello and thank you for getting me started in the hobby.

Thank you and glad your plywood tank turned out well.

I built a couple of them in the past also.

The Jack Dempsey was the first cichlid I owned and still enjoy them very much.

I have at least one pair in the big tank but I seldom see them as they prefer the deepest water and hide in the rocks a lot.

I had several in the 15k but they have been wiped out over the past 3 years by the larger cichlids.

I still have a group of 6 in an otherwise Malawi tank (180 g). They do well and breed non stop. The babies however always get eaten by the other cichlids unless I remove them.

The green terrors are now down to just one in the 15k. Probably they were taken out by the Dorado.

So in the 15k Jack Dempsey's and Green terrors do not do well in that mix.

I am surprised your cichlids have not taken out your blue lobsters.

The tank temp varies as I manually adjust the temperature during colder months.

Generally I raise it to about 26 C then let it slowly fall to about 21 C. I then repeat. I find it costs me less than maintaining a steady temp.

In warmer months I monitor it regularly and just make sure it is above 21 C. I don't have a problem with it getting too hot regardless of the outside temps as the insulation to keep it warm in the colder months also keeps it cooler in the warmer months.

By keeping cooler temps the fish appear to generally have longer life spans.
1. Do I understand correctly that the the temp difference is 5 deg?
e.g heaters kick in at 21 C and shut off at 26 C

2. Is this from personal experience with tropical's or advice from someone else?

'I am surprised your cichlids have not taken out your blue lobsters.'

ive never seen any aggression toward the blue lobsters, quite the opposite in fact.
They even try to catch my oscar at feeding time :)

Have you ever thought of using an rc mini submarine with a small video camera attached to explore your tank?
You could make a documentary with a tank your size..
