Crap. Will this grow back?

Ok. I did a water change today and my juruense got a wild hair up her butt and decided to do her best to hide under a powerhead that's sitting flush on the bottom of the tank. She succeeded in bulldozing herself under it, but in doing so managed to get her tail into the impeller, which cut off her top streamer and messed up the tip of her upper lobe. I know the streamer grows back when it gets cut off farther from the tail, but will it grow back with being cut off this close to its origin? Kinda worried here.

Here's a pic. You can tell that it must have hurt because her colors are really dark and washed out and she looks stressed. I put salt in the tank and gave her a big meal so hopefully she heals up quick.

my tig had a similar injury and his grew back but i guess only time will tell.

Thanks Necro. I was worried that the streamer being cut that close to its point of origin might cause it not to grow back. She normally loses part of her streamer every week or so, but its never been this bad before!

She's looking a LOT better today! Hopefully she heals up nice and quick.

Wow chicx sorry to hear that. Your cat should be fine in a little while, they are suprisingly very tough fish. Obviously you know how to react when something like this happens. Don't sweat it, I'm sure every fish in your care will live a long healthy life.

I always fed mine shrimp, bloodworms, and cichlid pellets. Went from 5" to 16" in the year I had it. Never was a fussy eater though. Interesting to see how some fish of same species do under different circumstances. Of course mine only had one eye so maybe that made him more opportunistic??? Hope that you are able to get them feeding soon. How big are they?

She was an absolute pain to break off of live, but I did break her. She still won't eat pellets though. I feed her chunks of trout.

Give it about 2 to 3 weeks you should see improvement.
