Just want to add that I'm eating friend whole smelt right now with lobster tail, crawfish, and conch meat. Delicious Friday night dinner.

Looks yummy and beats the spit out of the salty freid chicken I just ate.

I had it down in the Carribean and it was delicious..I bought some from a market here, took it home and cooked it and it came out like leather, guess I have to learn how to properly prepare it.

Conch is absolutely delicious.. Krich you need to cook it very, very long ;)

They have it in different dishes in the islands but I liked it grilled and batter fried the best.....

Ive fed smelt for a few years now to my cichlids and when i had a monster catfish this was everything he would eat. I havent seen any adverse effects if fed as a non staple diet ie maybe once a week face stuffing session.
On another note i was told by an old asian woman (i think) that smelt is delicious fried and in soup. Ill take her word for it.

I have my reasons but I no longer feed it to my fish but I have thought of trying it in a few dishes.

Smelt is bad for your fish. I would recommend replacing it with something else.

Here in the middle of Missouri I can get fillets for about the same price as you. I prefer to feed trout, but failing that being available I'll feed tilapia or salmon. If you can, leave the skin on as it contains a bunch of vitamins and minerals and fat and will make for a more nutritious meal.
